Praised by Gramophone for the “beauty, colouring and depth of tone” and described by BBC Music Magazine as “wonderfully unshowy despite the glittering quality”, Berlin-based pianist Nikolai Medvedev has established himself as a distinctive voice combining the depth of the Russian pianistic. tradition with structural clarity, tonal refinement and commanding virtuosity.

Medvedev’s repertoire centres on Russian and Western Romantic masterworks, with particular affinity for large-scale forms and virtuoso repertoire. His programmes frequently include Rachmaninov, Liszt, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Schumann and Mendelssohn, alongside works by Bach and Haydn. A distinctive element of his artistic profile is the music of Nikolai Kapustin, which he performs regularly in recital, combining classical precision with rhythmic vitality and brilliance.

Since relocating to Berlin in 2022, he has expanded his presence across the European concert scene, with appearances at Konzerthaus Berlin, Brucknerhaus Linz, Palermo Piano Festival, Rachmaninov Piano Festival (Colombia), Bogota Philarmony and other international platforms.

Born in 1986, Medvedev studied at the Rimsky-Korsakov Music College in Krasnodar and at the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music in Moscow under Tatiana Zelikman. His artistic development was further shaped by musicians including Nikolai Petrov, Dmitry Bashkirov, Vladimir Tropp and others. Prizewinner of several international competitions — among them the Horowitz Competition (2nd Prize), Campillos International Piano Competition (2nd Prize), and winner of the Vera Lotar-Schewtschenko Competition — he was also a semi-finalist of the XV International Tchaikovsky Competition.

From 2014 to 2022, he was a member of the piano faculty at the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music, teaching solo piano and chamber music.

In June 2026, he will release the album Fusions on SOMM Recordings, featuring works by Kapustin and Gershwin/Wild — a programme that highlights pianistic brilliance, stylistic versatility and crossover appeal for both traditional recital series and festival audiences. Alongside his concert career, Medvedev is regularly engaged in socially oriented artistic initiatives.
